Student waste and recycling problems

Joni Lloyd, University of Bristol, Community Liaison Officer has been working with Bristol Waste to develop some resources which we can use to address specific waste and recycling mismanagement issues with our student neighbours.

Sometimes a gentle reminder is all that is needed so one option is to print and post these flyers (there are two per page to save paper and ink) which address common problems:

  • Bins left on the pavement
  • Incorrectly sorted recycling
  • Overflowing bins

Go to complaints about student behaviour webpage to download the flyers.

If this does not prove effective, then please do report to  community-living@bristol.ac.uk  as a complaint.   If you do see a positive change then please  let  BCR Street Scene know (streetscene@bcrcp.org.uk ) as well as Joni so we can monitor any impact. community-living@bristol.ac.uk

The other pre-emptive messages may be useful in advance of students going away for the holidays or around April/May when they will be moving out soon.

There will be more information soon about this year’s Bristol Big Give which is an annual student move-out collection and recycling campaign run by the universities which donates unwanted goods to charity. The University of Bristol and Bristol Student Union collaborates with University of the West of England (UWE), UWE Student Union and Bristol City Council;

Joni has said that the University will be putting extra focus this year on move out waste and will produce a leaflet on options along with the Big Give campaign

She thinks that last year they did well at promoting donating to the British Heart Foundation  (BHF) red boxes but not so well at how to avoid leaving a big pile of waste at move out so she is  addressing that more this year
